Santa Fe Therapy Associates (SFTA) was founded in 2008. It began as a small facility and has experienced significant growth every year since its founding by Director Melissa Wilson. Its heart beats strong–an acclaimed staff of 35+ professionals is guided to take good care of it.
Melissa has been practicing full-time as a Speech-Language Pathologist for more than 30 years.
She received her initial training in Orofacial Myology in 2006, which inspired her to start SFTA in 2008. She then achieved certification from the International Association of Orofacial Myology(IAOM) in 2010. This required taking the specified coursework, passing a proficiency exam, and having an onsite evaluation in order to obtain IAOM certification. It also requires maintenance of ongoing training in order to continue being able to claim certification.
“Most people wait to change the oral complex only after the whole oral complex is impacted,” says the director. “The realities are it’s time to change it sooner.” Her reference is to: chewing and swallowing difficulties, tongue thrust swallow patterns, jaw pain, sleep impediments sometimes related to a restricted airway, developmental speech impediments related to restrictions in the oral cavity, vocalization, open mouth posture related to restricted airways, and poor muscle functioning in the lips/jaw/cheeks.
